Raku-firing Workshop & Potluck Party

  • Warehome Studio 2520 Copper Ridge Drive Steamboat Springs, CO, 80487 United States (map)

Taught by: Julie Anderson

Date/time: Saturday, March 4, 2017

3-8 pm

Cost: $75, includes instructor fee, glazes and firings for up to 3 pieces

Description:  Raku firing provides instant gratification for the artist!  Glazed ceramic pieces are taken out of the raku kiln, glowing red at around 1850 degrees Fahrenheit.  These pieces are immediately placed in a combustible material inside a steel can to produce flashing, crackle effects and rainbow metallic finishes.  Each firing takes about 30 minutes or so.  The ceramic piece is usually cooled within an hour, showing the highly variable effect. Students will learn glazing methods, safety procedures, and firing techniques.  Glaze results can be highly variable and exciting!  This will be a potluck event to fuel our fun with fire!  Please bring a dish to pass to celebrate the fun and enjoy the company of other artists.

Additional Note:  Participating students must have 3 bisque-fired pieces to fire.  We will not be making work in this workshop – it is only for those who have produced pieces ahead of time to be fired.  Friends and family are welcome to watch after 5pm when we start the firings.
