Dates: August 9-10, 1-5pm
Minimum age: 13 - for both teens and adults
Description: This two-day hands-on experience will provide guided instruction on making hand-built Ocarinas. Ocarinas belong to an ancient family of woodwind instruments that date back thousands of years all over the world. The Maya and Aztec cultures produced clay ocarinas, often shaped like birds or animals, for musical and ceremonial purposes. We will discover approachable hand-building methods to create these magical little instruments. Have you ever wanted to let the clay tell you what it wants to be? You never know what will evolve from the small ball of clay we start with. Let your imagination run wild and see what bird or animal comes out for you!
About the Instructor: Xenia is our current resident artist at Warehome Studios. Her background in ceramics involves making custom commodes and wash basins using molds and underglazes. As time went on, hand building and wheel throwing became a regular practice. She has made ceramics part of her journey for the bulk of her life and doesn’t limit herself in the process or style. She enjoys the diversity clay offers and views the painting/glazing process as a whole different art form. Come join her playful and colorful workshop.

Description: Raku firing provides instant gratification for the artist! Glazed ceramic pieces are taken out of the raku kiln, glowing red at around 1850 degrees Fahrenheit. These pieces are immediately placed in a combustible material inside a steel can to produce flashing, crackle effects and rainbow metallic finishes. Each firing takes about 30 minutes or so. The ceramic piece is usually cooled within an hour, showing the highly variable effect. Students will learn glazing methods, safety procedures, and firing techniques. Glaze results can be highly variable and exciting! Students must have bisque-fired work ready to fire and can fire up to 3 pieces during the session, depending on size. This will be a potluck event to fuel our fun with fire! Please bring a dish to pass to celebrate the fun and enjoy the company of other artists.
